It never heats enough to melt solder. It does get hot - it will burn you if you touch it, but wont melt even the finest solder I own in free air - 63/37, about 30 gauge. As stated in the ad, 15 seconds on; but unstated is approx 2 min of off-time before it will permit the next 15 seconds of on-time. I was hopeful, but am now disappointed.
 
Very useful
Very useful if youre out and about and need to solder something, the iron itself is of high quality and I would recommend this product.
